Travel Information

Rochdale is well served by transport links and a short ride from Manchester and Yorkshire.

Vibrant cities like Manchester and Liverpool are all easily accessible, while rugged moorland villages such as Hebden Bridge and Todmorden are just a short train or bus ride away.

Enviably located at the heart of the North West motorway network, drivers can access towns and cities across the region via the M62 and M60 motorways, which are just a short drive from Rochdale town centre.


Getting to Rochdale by car or coach is easily. Rochdale town centre is less than 10 minutes from M62 (junction 21).

Buses run from Manchester to Rochdale every 10 minutes throughout the day. The journey takes approximately 45 minutes. Details of which buses to catch are available on the Transport for Greater Manchester website or by calling the travel line number (0871 200 2233).


Trains run from Manchester and to Rochdale frequently. The direct service from Manchester Victoria takes around 20 minutes. Tickets cost £7.60 for 'anytime' return, £4.80 'off-peak' return, or £2.10 super 'off-peak' return (for trains departing between 6.30pm and 9pm).

The Rochdale metrolink extension runs into the heart of Rochdale town centre. For more details go to the Metrolink website.

Trams are now running on the new Rochdale Metrolink Extension. With journeys from central Manchester to Rochdale Train Station.

Plans are in place for trams every 12 minutes as the number of people using the new line increases.

Tickets prices (for journeys from Rochdale to Manchester city centre):

  • Peak 'anytime' single £4.30
  • Peak 'anytime' return £6.50
  • Off-peak return £4.60 (9.30am onwards)

Further savings can be made with special day, weekend, family and group passes, as well as longer term tickets, including weeklies, four-weeklies, quarterlies and annuals.

Coach parking

Coach parking is available and free (except where stated otherwise) in the following areas. Coach drivers must contact Rochdale Parking Administration in advance and give the vehicle registration number.


Rochdale is only 40 minutes drive from Manchester Airport. There are also train connections and an express service to Manchester city centre (every half hour) from where you catch a tram or bus into Rochdale town centre.
