Housed in Rochdale’s 1933 fire station the museum contains a fascinating collection of exhibits, some in recreations of Victorian and World War 2 scenes.
Whether it’s a rocking exploration of music expert John Peel’s close relationship with Rochdale, a cutting-edge visual arts exhibition, or an insight into the fascinating history of the area, you can be sure a visit to Touchstones Rochdale will excite and entertain. This award-winning Arts and Heritage Centre not only hosts a museum but several art galleries, a heritage centre, café and shop and presents a rolling programme of great events and workshops.
Nothing evokes the past like the aroma of steam and smoke trailing back from a vintage engine. And nothing compares to the stunning scenery you’ll see from a carriage on the wonderful East Lancashire Railway during the 12-mile journey from Heywood to Rawtenstall. If you need more steam and nostalgia there’s the world’s largest cotton mill steam engine to be seen at Ellenroad Engine House in Newhey.
If sport’s your family’s fascination you can enjoy watching Rochdale’s finest in action at the borough’s football club. Prefer rugby? How about taking the kids to see one of England’s oldest rugby league teams? Spotland Stadium is home to both Rochdale FC soccer club and Rochdale Hornets Rugby League Club.
For an energetic day out, head to the heart of the action at Hollingworth Lake Country Park. Start at the Visitor Centre to pick a guide to one of the beautiful walks you can take in the surrounding countryside, enjoy a spot of tea and cake in one the many cafes dotted around the Lake or get your adrenaline pumping at the Water Activity Centre.
