BACK TO MANCHESTER INDEPENDENTS

By Breaking Barriers, Parvez Qadir

Parvez Qadir created Breaking Barriers to follow his passion for working with young people from ‘marginalised’ communities. Parvez is devoted to uncovering stories from the community and using interdisciplinary art forms such as film, animation, visual imagery, soundscape and audio to tell stories in unconventional spaces to connect audiences to an immersive experience. Parvez won Artist of the Year in 2017 & 2018 at the Rochdale Borough Sport and Culture Awards.

Where’s that one spot you feel the most that you can be? The place that speaks to you, that draws you home when you’re not home, that centres you, the place where that thing happened? Stories We Tell is about those places.

Stories We Tell has been created in the ward of Deeplish and Milkstone – a diverse community with over 50 languages spoken. It explores the ways in which people’s memories, life events and experiences are embedded in the very walls and streets of a place, rooted in its very soil.

Bring your headphones (or borrow some of ours) and embark on a guided audio walk that brings the streets to life with extraordinary stories of our communities.

Walking tour. Meet at Bus Stop A in front of Rochdale Train Station; end at Deeplish Community Centre. Please wear comfortable footwear and dress for the weather!

Free on-street parking is available around Rochdale train station after 6pm.

Commissioned via Touchstones Rochdale where Parvez Qadir is Associate Artist, and Manchester Independents.

With thanks to the people of Deeplish.

Access Information:

Stories We Tell is a walking piece, guided in a group by a volunteer. In order to experience the audio and projection at the correct moments, you will be expected to keep up with the group. The route is mostly on pavements but there are a couple of curbs and corners to navigate.

There are moments of standing still for 4 - 7 minutes.

The full route is 25 minutes from start (in front of the train station) to finish (Deeplish Community Centre). If you have parked at the train station you will need to walk back again along the same route.

We provide MP3 players and earphones, but we recommend bringing your own earphones (with a rounded jack plug).

If you would prefer to listen on your own device (smartphone) we can email you the audio file ahead of the performance but please ensure you have internet to download it. To receive the file beforehand, please email Jodie on gmindependentartistinitiative@gmail.com

BSL Interpretation: Thursday 28th October at 7pm will be a BSL interpreted performance. You will be expected to walk close to the interpreter to access the signing.
